  • Coaches and therapists have a lot in common such as helping clients work through emotional discomfort or set goals. But while coaches and therapists both strive to provide safe spaces for exploration, listening, and client wellness, there are key differences in these professional offerings. It is good to be aware of these as you decide what might be needed for your situation.

Therapists are mental health professionals that are trained and certified to diagnose and/or treat mental illness. They provide clinical care. They are able to work with individuals who consider themselves to be functioning below ordinary levels or who have thinking or behavior patterns that significantly interfere with daily living.

Coaches are certified professionals that work with individuals functioning at ordinary levels to set goals, navigate professional or personal challenges, and to elevate performance. Coaches support mental fitness and whole person wellness.

Some coaches (such as at Junto) are trained as mental health coaches and are able to work with mild to moderate anxiety and depression as well as mental health concerns that are common to our lived experience. Junto coaches are also trauma-informed and trained to support nervous system regulation for clients who are functioning at ordinary levels but who may require additional whole person support.
